Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that has evolved from Japan, through Brazil and now to the United States. Incorporating the gi or kimono, BJJ involves taking down the opponent, controlling them, and ultimately submitting them through the application of joint locks and strangulations. BJJ is often referred to as the gentle art due to preferring technique over strength and is arguably the most effective ground grappling style. People of all walks of life practice and thrive at training BJJ.
Classes at Zoo BJJ are taught Mon-Sat. A typical class will include an endurance-building warm-up, demonstration and practice of both standing and ground techniques, positional drilling, and finally live sparring (rolling). In addition to BJJ, which serves as the core of our curriculum, we use techniques from other grappling arts such as Judo, Sambo, and Wrestling in order to develop well-rounded martial artists. By combining a safe, friendly learning environment with quality instruction, we provide an atmosphere that fosters unparalleled mental, physical, and social benefits.
Our doors are open to all practitioners, whatever your martial arts training -- no judgments, no biases. Come in, leave the ego at the door and try a class. We would love to have you!
BJJ Fundamentals
Our Fundamentals class is designed with the beginner in mind. Over the years we’ve refined our fundamentals class curriculum which focuses on building a solid foundation of BJJ through repetitious practice of the core standing and ground techniques. It’s also a great class for more experienced students that simply want more practice on the basics. A typical class will include a mobility warm up, demonstration and application of a fundamental standing and ground technique or two.
BJJ All Levels
Our All Levels class is primarily designed with the experienced student in mind, building on the fundamentals. However, it’s also set up so a beginner can easily participate. The primary difference between our Fundamentals and All Levels class is the complexity and sequencing of techniques and introduction to resistance training. A typical class will include a mobility warm up, demonstration and practice of a standing and ground technique or two, positional drilling and live randori (sparring).
